Welcome

  • Facilitator: Charles
  • Stack taker: Rachel
  • Minutes taker: Mark

Reportbacks

  • Decriminalize Poverty – Derrick: attended American Winter in Durham. Received feedback on the web page that we shouldn’t had gone as it supported a “progressive” organization that “gentrified” that part of Durham. We responded that we did not intend to support the organization, just watch the movie.
  • Why Wells Fargo – Mark: Rachel, Charles, and I handed out about 350 flyers in front of the City Council Building on Monday. We received feedback that ranged from “no thanks” to taking a flyer, to I’m just going in to pay my water bill, to surprise to the ATM fee, to “I’ll go to a different location” so that I don’t need to pay the fee. I’ll have a draft City Council speech together for Tuesday night
  • Moral Monday – Josh: We handed out most of our 1,000 Occu-cards at the demonstration. We had several (most) of the cards stickered with our OR logo/QR code. The Alec cards were most popular.
  • D-Day Memorial – Charles: Attended the events held in Raleigh since many of his family were in the military. Impressed with how many of the elderly gentlemen supported the OR approach.

Proposals

1. Reimburse Josh Bradley for OccuCard Purchase – there was general agreement, however, Dyck said that he would reimburse Josh directly so that we could save our OR funds for other activities. GA agreed on Dyck’s generous offer.

Topics for Open Discussion

  • Dyck – there will be national dialog on “Poverty/Wealth in America” as part of the September Inaugural Issue of the National Dialogue Network
  • Mark – should we order more Occu-cards to hand out? General agreement yes. Will pursue getting more.
  • Josh – there were several people from various Occupied’s across NC at the Moral Monday events. Should we plan on a state wide GA after one of the Moral Monday events since we have a broad representation from the various Occupies. After some discussion, we thought that instead of a GA (which could last much longer and make those from out of town very late in getting home), we could do a planning session or even a social event at NC State and serve Pizza. Josh will come up with a Proposal.
  • Mark – need to update our OR Web site, the current site has gotten rather “stale.” We discussed trying to get with BT and/or Clinton to see if they could help us. Mark will send an email to BT and Clinton to see if we can arrange a time to meet.

Announcements

  • Josh: Decriminalize Poverty will meet on Tuesday at 7pm
  • Rachel: There will be a viewing of “Money and Life” at NC State after GA
  • Charles: Moral Monday will continue on Monday
  • Charles: July 4th is coming up, we need to plan
  • Dyck: We should leverage one of the Raleigh events to help get our message out

Welcome

Reportbacks

Committee did recommend to meet with us on how to improve the situation. Will further discuss at our Decriminalize Poverty Committee meeting this week.

Proposals

To cancel GA on May 25, 2013. Passed.

Topics for Open Discussion

  • Antonio: How messed up is it that we have to be arrested to get a point across? Are we becoming too okay with that?
  • Josh: Should we buy Occucards, pick certain topics to be discussed, hand out those cards prior to GA, discuss that topic at GA, and further hand out Occucards after GA?

Welcome

  • Facilitator: Josh
  • Stack taker: Charles
  • Minutes taker: Derek

Reportbacks

  • Charles gave a reportback on the NAACP meeting last Tuesday. The Decriminalize Poverty meeting was moved there so folks could participate, but we turned out not to really have a meeting. But it was a good networking opportunity.
  • Josh: On May 14, the Law and Public Safety Committee will discuss our petition to repeal the panhandling laws.

Proposals

None.

Topics for Open Discussion

  • Derek would like us to return to using Occucards. We can order about 1,000 cards for about $100. We could make our GAs thematic (pick an Occucard for a Saturday, learn about the topic beforehand, have a discussion about it during GA, then pass the cards out to the public afterward). There are two new cards up at Occucards.com.
  • Lynn: The NO ran a piece on ALEC. I’m going to write a letter to the editor.

  • Josh: Should we endorse the NAACP events on Mondays? After a discussion, we decided that was unnecessary. We will just show up.

Announcements

  • Detroit: There will be a Monsanto march May 25. Also, the scabs who were sent in to the Detroit fast food restaurants where workers were on strike, also went on strike.
  • Charles: Recently spoke to someone who had been part of Occupy Duke. She may come to GA. Also, the oil spill in AR turned out to be about 25 square miles and all the soil is ruined.
  • Josh: Decriminalize Poverty will meet Tuesday at 7pm at Royal Mall.

Welcome

  • Facilitator: Detroit
  • Minutes taker: Mark

Reportbacks

  • Josh – Decriminalize Poverty: Recapped the discussion from last week’s meeting. Petition posted on one web site and will get posted on others over the weekend.
  • Charles: 1. Seven Mother’s Indigenous Lobby Day was last week. OR was represented at the event. There is a bill to remove the NC tribes off of “welfare” but, instead, recognize them as tribes, which would be better. About 100 people attended. 2. May Day had a big turnout, mostly students. There were 5 arrests. Had speakers at key stops (US Post Office, jail, City Council building, Jones Street, Halifax Mall).

Proposals

None.

Topics for Open Discussion

  • Margaret: HKOJ/NAACP – will be hosting events Monday and Tuesday. We discussed participating in the Tuesday event. Decided that we would hold our Decriminalize Poverty working-group meeting at the rally on Tuesday so that OR could participate and show our support.
  • Josh: Will be sending out an invitation letter concerning a gathering this summer of “center – left” groups to discuss events in NC by the extreme right. Not sure exactly when the gathering would be, will be driven by response to letter. Possible theme: “Take Back our State.” Make it a state-wide event.

Announcements

  • Charles: 1. NAACP meetings this week (reiterated what Margaret brought up). 2. Decriminalize Poverty meeting this week will be held at the NAACP event on Tuesday at 7pm. 3. Recommend anarchist news site for information. 4. Is thinking about starting a book club within OR and friends where we would read whatever book we wanted, but get together to discuss what we read.
  • Josh: Once his wife is a bit better he will be starting up Occupy the Airwaves again.

Reportbacks

  • Jess – held a forum at NC State from Crimethinc on capitalism and work book. Had a very good and lively discussion/debate that lasted well past the stop time.
  • Charles – had a discussion with relatives on religion and the environment. Was able to do outreach because he was able to weave in Occupy.
  • Josh – Decriminalize Poverty met on Tuesday. We are on the agenda on the Public Safety committee. April 23 meeting was canceled, so not sure when. We need to check on Fridays to see if we are on the agenda for the following week. We also discussed a petition to require an amendment that if the state legislature is going to require the poor to undergo drug testing prior to obtain their benefits, that state legislators must undergo random yearly drug tests and breathalyzer tests prior to voting.
  • Josh – Infiltration – hoping one of our members will get elected to the Democratic Executive Steering Committee in NC.

Proposals

None.

Topics for Open Discussion

  • Ramone – Wants to coordinate a panhandling event where he will apply for a panhandling permit with an ID, someone else (Jess) with an ID and “white”, and someone else (Charles) without an ID to see how well the process works. Also discussed having someone go out to panhandle with a sign that says something like “Help! I can’t take your money, but need your help to over turn the panhandling laws” and hand out information on the subject.
  • Charles – Would like to get support for an “Idle No More” event on the Halifax Mall to protest the state legislature continuing to steal land that was promised. The event is Wednesday, 4/24/13, from 3pm – 7pm.

Welcome

  • Facilitator: Josh
  • Stack taker: Charles
  • Minutes taker: Mark

Reportbacks

  • Why Wells Fargo – Mark reported on his experience with handing out information to a few that used the Wells Fargo ATM before the security guard stopped him.
  • Outreach – will meet at a local park 4/27. Location will be decided after GA
  • Decriminalize Poverty met this past Tuesday. NC is considering that all who receive a welfare check will need to take a drug test first. Proposal is to amend the proposed law to ALSO have all elected officials submit to a drug test prior to their swearing in and to submit to a breathalyzer test prior to submitting their votes.

Proposals

1. Endorse May Day event. Unanimously passed, no stand asides, no blockers. 2. Endorse the Decriminalize Poverty upcoming petition (see report-back above) – unanimously passed, no stand asides, no blockers.

Topics for Open Discussion

  • Margaret: Reported feedback that there are at least a couple of people that strongly state that they would NOT come back to OR due to issues they experienced previously. We had a lively discussion about this. A recommendation is to ensure that all are made to feel welcome and respected at our GAs (especially the women present).
  • Josh: Now is the time to take action due to all of the “stuff” going on. We need to try to get people (re-)energized, perhaps by doing talks in local communities, schools, etc. This also got some some lively discussion. We need to not take things personally.

Announcements

  • (Mark) Newsletter will be published this Friday. Need ideas. Some discussed at GA were: Gwen and Antonio’s wedding, Antonio’s court case being dismissed, Climate Change Convergence in Raleigh.
  • (Charles) Brazilian indigenous people are being forcefully removed from a building they’ve been living in for 30 years to make way for an Olympic Stadium.

Welcome

  • Facilitator: Josh
  • Stack taker: Margaret, Charles
  • Minutes taker: Rachel

Reportbacks

Charles put about 150 flyers for Tuesday in people’s mailboxes.

Proposals

1. To reimburse Rachel the cost of stickers (roughly $15) for people to wear Tuesday night. Two stand-asides (Dee–because she is on Finance; Katina–because she has been out of the loop). Passed.

2. A General Assembly cannot be convened until: a. someone has been assigned to take minutes and has the tools with which to take them, and b. the minutes from the previous GA have been posted by the minutes-taker on the Occupy Raleigh wiki, website, or forums. One stand-aside (Charles–because he missed part of the conversation). Passed.

3. Emergency proposal–where to hold GAs in the future: Moore Square is home base until further notice. The Capitol is our back-up default for rain or festivals being held in Moore Square. Those who want to see GA move around to other parks will get together, check the festival schedule, make a calendar for the summer, and propose it at a future GA. Passed.

Topics for Open Discussion

Katina: wants to make a proposal for Strike Debt to become an affinity group of Occupy Raleigh. By the end of the discussion, we worked out that she will propose that OR endorse SD.

Rachel: discussion of plans for Tuesday night. We will make stickers with our DP logo and add “Occupy Raleigh” underneath. We will bring tables, plates, utensils, cups, napkins, and serving platters, and Food Not Bombs will cook all the food. We will have dinner ready to serve at 6pm. Rachel will post a stock media answer on the forums.

Announcements

Communications working group will not meet this week.

Rachel, Antonio, and Ryan will be speaking to two classes at NCSU in the next two weeks about OR.
