Occupy Chapel Hill / Occupy Durham are visiting the Triangle to occupy the federal court building on Fri., Jan. 20. They’ll be there all day, from 10:30am to 5pm. Let’s join them!

Below is an email our sister occupation group sent out with more information.

***Move to Amend’s call to Occupy the Courts! (http://movetoamend.org/occupythecourts) is a nation-wide demonstration protesting the Citizens United ruling in favor of corporate personhood.***

HELLO to all those interested in joining a direct action for Occupy the Courts! on January 20th!

Here’s where we stand after our first meeting tonight…

We plan to, by carpool or/and bus, head from Chapel Hill/Carrboro around 9am on Friday, January 20th, pick up participants in Durham, and arrive at the Raleigh District Court around 10:30am. We’ll set up outside the courthouse quickly and be in place by the time people start taking lunch breaks from work. We’ll Occupy until 5pm, collect our things, leave no trash or belongings behind, and head back to Durham and Chapel Hill.

Here’s where you come in!

We need volunteers to:

  • · Hop on the bus or in a carpool to Raleigh with us on the 20th!
  • · Hand out literature and talk to passersby.
  • · Film and photograph.
  • · By this Sunday, scope out the courthouse area for a reasonable gathering space and pick points to drop items off or debark a bus. Please take a few photographs.
  • · Spread the word to Triangle organizations. We’re working on contacting groups and designating point people for each. (Email for a list of those organizations, if you’re interested.) Let us know of interested groups and who their point person is, so that they can be added to the email distribution list.

We need volunteers for the following things:

  • · 1 or 2 tents (anyone have a simple canopy tent?)
  • · 1 or 2 folding tables for literature and etc.
  • · Folding chairs
  • · Laptops for people to sign petition on Move to Amend website
  • · Instruments/musicians (I hear rumors of a tuba shaped instrument…)
  • · Signs
  • · Banner/s

Occupy Durham’s Direct Action Workgroup has tentatively scheduled a sign and banner making day for next Tuesday, January 17th. This may or may not include making corporation costumes. (You know you have always wanted to dress up like Fannie Mae and J.P. Morgan and promenade together up and down the lawn before the courthouse. You know it. :P )

We currently have enough people to charter a biodiesel shuttle for approximately 16 and van for approximately 6 people, but I have heard a variety of feedback. It would probably run $15 – $20 a seat. If you feel strongly that you would rather bus than carpool to Raleigh, please let me know as soon as possible!

It has been suggested we have a press conference at some point during the day. If you are interested in developing this angle either by writing a press release or being available to talk with the press on the 20th, please let us know. We would need to have a press release ready to go by Monday, January 16.

Please continue to let us know of your interest, so we can add you to our growing list of participants. If you are able to volunteer for any of the listings above, please let us know as soon as possible!

Here’s to a multi-Occupy, multi-activist-organization turn out! Let’s stand together and make clear the Triangle’s opinion on corporate personhood and Citizens United!

Thanks for all you do!

In solidarity and hope,

Heather
